Shirley Louise Johannes, the daughter of Howard Walter Mickey and Edith Mae (Walton) Mickey, was born May 2, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa. She lived in Taylor and Union County most of her life. Shirley attended Kent Elementary School and graduated from Cromwell High School with the class of 1956.
Shirley married Boyd Junior Johannes on October 3, 1957 in Colorado Springs, Colorado where they resided for a time before moving back to Iowa. She worked a short time in Bedford and worked in Lenox for the Sheridan Egg Company and Papetti’s for several years. Following the birth of her five daughters: Vickie, Teresa, April, Crystal and Debbie, Shirley stayed home to devote her time to her family, working as a Homemaker. She was a Jehovah’s Witness and attended the Kingdom Hall in Creston and Bedford.
Preceding Shirley in death were her husband, Boyd, in 1988; her daughter, Debbie Jones, in 1992; her parents and a brother-in-law, Henry “Sonny” Brammer.
Left to cherish her memory are four daughters: Vickie Nelson (husband Jerry) of Corning, IA, Teresa Johannes of Bluffton, IN, April Kavanaugh (husband Frank) of Bakersfield, CA, Crystal Means (husband Jarid) of Conway, AR; 11 grandchildren: Rachel Gray Leeman Nelson; Mariah Johannes Brendan Sille; Elizabeth, Hannah Rebekah Vermeulen; Tristan Kinnaird; Kylar Ranney, Gracie Kavanaugh; Alyssa Means; two great-grandchildren, Corbin Brylee. She is also survived by two sisters, Patty Brammer of Creston and Linda Bolinger (husband Doc) of Lenox; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
