Velma Fay Giles, the daughter of Thomas and Pearl (Long) Bird, was born on May 14, 1920, at Knowlton, Iowa, in Jefferson County. Velma entered eternal rest on January 10, 2010, at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, at the age of eighty-nine years, seven months and twenty-nine days.
Velma graduated from high school in Iowa, and then taught rural school. On March 22, 1944, she married Willis Ferman Giles at Troy, Kansas. She worked for Gits Manufacturing in Creston for several years. In 1957 she moved to South Gate, California where she worked for Lockheed-Martin as a supervisor until her health failed. In 2006, Velma moved to Lisbon, Ohio, and then in April, 2009, she moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Velma enjoyed selling Avon for over twenty years.
Left to cherish Velmas memory are her Son: Steven (Debbie) Giles, Lake Havasu City, Arizona; her Four Grandchildren: Sheila (Steve) Smolinsky, Brookfield, Ohio; Christopher Giles, Austintown, Ohio; Kari (Nathan) Hook, Lockbourne, Ohio; Michael Giles, Alliance, Ohio; her Six Great-Grandchildren: Brittney and Twins: Stevie and Ashlyn, all of Newton Falls, Ohio; Victor, of Hemit, California; Dylan and Zachary, of Lockbourne, Ohio; her Sister: Beaulah Antisdel, South Gate, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Velma in death were her Parents; her husband, Willis, on May 16, 1969; her infant daughter, Cathy Jo, on March 14, 1956; four brothers; two sisters; and one brother-in-law.
