Charles Laverne (Vern) McCarty was born April 3, 1930 in the countryside north of Prescott, Iowa, the son of Nellie Mae Freeman and Charles Daniel McCarty. He graduated from Prescott High School with the class of 1947. He served his country in the Iowa National Guard after high school. On July 26, 1959, he married Veda Marie Bailey in Anita, Iowa. Four children were born to bless their lives, Katie Sue in 1960, Karl Thomas in 1961, Kimberly Ann in 1962 and Karen Kay in 1964.
Left to cherish his memory are his four children, daughter Katie and husband Tim Rhamy of Corning, Karl and wife Julie McCarty of Prescott, Kimberly and husband Michael Fourez of Corning, and Karen and husband Mark Finck of Rock Valley, a sister Carol and husband Ken Foster of Creston. One sister in law Vesta Duensing of Metaire, Louisiana, and one brother in law Varel and wife Jackie Bailey of Anita. Grandchildren, Ryan and Rusty Rhamy, Alexander and Ciara McCarty, Miaya Fourez, Lyla, Rebecca, and Tyrel Finck, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
His love for the farm, started very young in his life. He worked the fields with the horses, but enjoyed it when his father finally bought a tractor. Shortly after graduating, he bought the adjacent farm, so that he could still work with his father. Awarded for his efforts in soil conservation in the 60’s, he was ahead of his time when it came to land stewardship.
His favorite time of year was the spring when the farm was full of new life. Watching the calves jump across the field was an experience he always shared. Every Easter, there was a tractor tour out to the field with all the children and grandchildren.
Each summer was spent gardening and tending his roses. Veda his wife was presented with the first rose of the season. His roses have always been special to him as he grew lavender roses for his own bride over 54 years ago.
During the farm down time, you could find him in his workshop working on a new wood project for the children or grandchildren. Remodeling the house just days before a big family dinner would test the patience of his wife, but he never would let her down.
Preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Nellie McCarty; his in-laws Thomas and Iris Bailey, and brother in-law Loren Duensing.
Laverne McCarty, age 83 died at Corning Nursing and Rehab in Corning, Iowa on March 3rd, 2014 after struggling with many health issues over the past few years.
