Vivian Pollard

Vivian Phyllis Pollard, only child of Harry Warren Butler and Mae Ellen (Wilcox) Butler, was born August 12, 1920 on a farm in Adams County, Iowa.
When Vivian was three months old, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri where her father was a streetcar operator. Vivian and her family attended Covenant Presbyterian Church on E. 60th Street in Kansas City. She and her friend Aylette Bowen Silver attended Mark Twain Elementary School. Aylette was her next door neighbor and the best friend she ever had.
In 1932, the family moved back to Lenox where from September to March she attended a rural school. They then moved into Lenox where she graduated with the class of 1939. After graduation, Vivian worked for Esther Dixon for 25 years as her “unofficial secretary”.
Vivian joined the American Legion Auxiliary in 1942. On a beautiful Easter morning in 1943, she was baptized at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox; in 1964 she joined St. Patrick Catholic Church.
She began working in 1967 for Mae Wurster at a cafe in Lenox and also worked for Isabel Jenkins. In 1972, she went to Kansas City to visit a friend, and met Robert Otto Pollard. Robert was a war hero. He had received four decorations for bravery and four bronze stars while serving in Normandy and Brittan and two bronze stars in North Africa during WWII. After WWII, he re-enlisted and served in the Korean War. Robert and Vivian were married June 2, 1972 in Kansas City and moved back to Lenox in 1976.
She was a member of the St. Patrick Alter Society, the Lenox Republican Ladies Club, a faithful Legion Auxiliary member, and always had masses said for relatives and friends. Vivian sent birthday cards to all the women and girls of the catholic church; always gave money to the valedictorian of the graduating class at Lenox High School; gave baby books to new parents at the church; always gave money to the church and charities even though she had a limited income. Vivian was always willing to share.
After Roberts death in 1980 Vivian suffered a stroke in 1982, from which she never fully recovered.
Vivian entered eternal rest on November 20, 2005 at Mt. Ayr Health Care Center at the age of eighty-five years, three months and ten days. She was laid to rest beside her husband, Robert in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 1970, her father in 1972; her special friend, Ray Venteicher and her husband, Robert in 1980.
Vivian is survived by three special cousins; Carolyn Wilcox (Dr. James) Chromy, Raleigh, North Carolina, Berneeta Austin, Mt Ayr, Iowa; Roberta (Bob) Lockhart, Lenox, Iowa; special friends, Jeannette Lutrick, Mt Ayr, Iowa, Cheryl Wilson, Lenox, Iowa and other relatives and friends.
