William “Bill” John Dimmler was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 27, 1961, to James Downs and Margaret “Peggy” Faith. At the age of 10 months he was adopted by Frederick “Fred” and Mary Dimmler of Corning. Bill entered eternal rest on June 3, 2025, at his home in Corning at the age of 63 years, 10 months and 7 days.
Bill grew up and attended school in Corning. He married Christina “Christy” Morehouse on August 3, 1978, in Corning. The couple was blessed with three daughters: Joleen, Jamie and Jackie. They later divorced. Bill met his fiancée, Anne Blair, in 1990 and they were blessed with a son, William “Billy”, and a daughter, Sydney.
Bill lived most of his life in Iowa, except for several years when he lived in Oregon. With a love for adventure, Bill spent his younger years traveling state to state, often by hitchhiking and jumping trains.
Spring and summer were Bill’s favorite time of the year. He was happy camping with his family, canoeing and mushroom hunting. The 4th of July was his favorite holiday. Bill took fishing trips to Florida and Puerto Rico with family. Along the way he collected arrowheads and marbles. He also loved swap meets, primarily to find a bargain and just to talk to the people. He never met a stranger.
Bill enjoyed many jobs throughout his life. He worked for Olin Strait Construction and Barton Construction for several years, but found a permanent place at Blacktop Services Company in Mount Etna. He couldn’t wait to return there, even after his cancer diagnosis in April of this year. He thoroughly enjoyed the people he worked with and the lifelong friendships he made there. Bill was a great friend to many, always willing to lend a hand. You could often find him sharing stories and wisdom at The Pub in Corning, He had a heart of friendship and love. He will truly be missed by many that were fortunate enough to know him.
Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his fiancée, Anne Blair; his father, James (Janice) Downs; his five children, including Joleen Most (children Danica, Alana and James}; Jamie (husband Jason and children Aaron, Halle, Madison, Aspen and Alexa); Jackie Dimmler (daughter Andraya); Billy (wife Alisha and children Ella, Ashtyn, Rylea and Mason); and Sydney (fiancé Mike Sickels and children Kyson, Kayden, Kooper and Brynnlee). Bill is also survived by his “adopted daughter” Samantha Williams, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Other survivors include his siblings: Ed Dimmler, Theresa (Larry) Crandall, Baron (Amy) Downs, Jamie (Scott) Sargent, Bill (Gloria) Miller, Ron (Teresa) Miller and Dale (Megan) Miller.
Preceding Bill in death were his parents Fred & Mary Dimmler; mother and step-father Bill and Margaret “Peggy” Miller; his sister Catherine “Cathy” Tracy and brother Danny Butters.
