While Dr Byerly served House District 61 in 1974, I was assigned as his intern for credits by former State Senator Daryl Beall, at the time my government teacher at Urbandale High School. My foundation for the importance of constituent services and solid labor relations was built there. My sincerest condolences to Christi, and all the family.

reading of Rich's passing and David Palmer's tribute reminds me of what a smooth and polished pusher and innovator rich was ==he made SWCC and Creston a better and more active place==many seminars and large group meetings are now held on campus making it a mecca for the south west quarter of Iowa and it all started with Rich==in the 1990s I was a member of the Iowa Western board and representative to the state association and became well acquainted with Rich and David Palmer==Rich definitely left his mark and contributed greatly to Creston and the community colleges of Iowa. Paul Jones, Clarinda.

Rich was and always will be, my best friend! We met in 1966 at ISU, where we were working on our PHD’s. Our friendship began the day he started tutoring me in statistics, which I hated. Once Rich graduated in 1970, we worked side by side for the next 14yrs. During the 14yrs we co-authored a book called “Road Map to Federal Funding”, in which we traveled over the US and conducted several workshops. I will never forget the things we did and the memories we created. I remember when I lived in Ankeny we had signals if Rich wanted to come over. If the curtains were open, he could come in. When the curtains were closed, he couldn’t come in. We always had each other’s back 100%. There were good times and bad times, but we never let each other down. He is a man of his word and a very honorable friend. He will forever be in my heart and never forgotten. Miss you, Rich. Dr. Philip Langerman

So many memories of being on hunting trips with my dad, Rich and his kids. I’m sure I heard them repeated dozens of times over the years. It’s like they happened yesterday they are so etched in my mind even though it was almost 50 years ago. Rich was more full of life than most people and that spilled onto everybody he came in contact with. He is one person I am looking forward to seeing when I get to heaven. Sorry for your loss but as the obituary says, Rich is with his Savior and one day you will have a great reunion.

I remember Rich's first campaign for the Iowa House and how hard so many of us worked to get him elected. And I was always impressed with how quickly his mind worked. After many years as his friend in Ankeny and DMACC, I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

I became acquainted with Rich when he joined the DMACC staff. We were colleagues, friends, and fellow Democrats (Rich was instrumental in converting me from R to D) during his time at DMACC. Rich certainly made a positive mark on DMACC. I have very good memories of Rich and his family (Tony and my son Dave were in the same class in the Ankeny schools). Don Zuck
Susan and Bill Tridle left a message on May 28, 2020:
Rich was a good man. We were blessed to have him be part of our life. The times spent together telling some wild, but true, crazy stories with a glass of wine will never be forgotten. Coyote hunting with his figs was enjoyable. His graciousness with inviting Sue to use his pool at any time was beyond the parameters of friendship. It cultivated a friendship with Chris that means the world to Sue. Rich will be greatly missed by us. Our deepest heartfelt condolences to Chris and the entire family.

I enjoyed hearing Rich's stories and watching old cowboy movies with him. I enjoyed cooking him breakfast every chance I got, and he was very appreciative! He was very compassionate, encouraged me and expressed admiration for my work teaching impoverished immigrant children. He was one of a kind for sure. He adored his beautiful beloved Chris and couldn't get along without her for 5 minutes. I miss him.

Kris and family, we are so sorry for the loss to you and all of the other family members of this good man. He truly sounds like a jewel and a very interesting fellow. All that we needed to know was that he loved you and his family so had no idea about all of his many accomplishments through the years. May the love he gave and the wonderful memories you cherish sustain all of you through the coming weeks. With love and our condolences from the SE corner of Iowa.

So sorry for your loss. I had just started at SWCC when Rich became president. When he would see me he always asked about my grandpa whom he coyote hunted with for many years. And after my dad's farm accident, he always asked about him as well as our family. I ran into him at IACCT a few years ago when he was visiting Dave Palmer. My condolences to Rich's family.

Sherri and I will forever be grateful for having known and been a friend of Rich's for the last 35 years. I started work at Southwestern in 1985 which turned out to be one of the best professional decisions I ever made. The management style Rich brought with him (The Total Trust System) encouraged employees to grow professionally, politically, and personally. To say Rich was one of a kind could be an understatement but to partner with him to make improvements during those years has left me a better person. That is your legacy in my mind my friend. RIP Rich.
Lori Hays left a message on May 27, 2020:
Rich and I enjoyed discussing politics, but always between the two of of us. We didn’t want anybody else to suffer through our conversation. We also had something else in common. We were both very familiar with some of the same men in the. United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers (UAW) of America. They backed him in the Legislature and he had their backs when it came to writing new legislation for workers and worker’s rights. He always stood on the side of the working man. I always got tickled when Rich would say, “Do you remember back in ‘73 when we...!” I’d have to chuckle and remind him that in ‘73, I was 13. It was easy for Rich to forget that because we were talking about the same people who good friends to both of us. You didn’t get to come out, sit outside, and have our pizza. We’ll have Christi down, sit outside, look up at the sky, and we’ll know you’ll be somewhere there with us. My life has been blessed to have had you in it. I have been proud, and it has been a pleasure to call you my brother-in-law. Your Body had grown tired and weary. It’s time for it to lay in Rest here on Earth.. It’s time to spread your wings and your Soul to Soar to your Eternal Heavenly Home. You will be greatly missed.
